On an average day, I may take 50+ calls, and at least every candidate I speak with tells me they are “looking for career progression”.
Somehow this phrase has become meaningless and I always ask – “What is the real reason you want to change job?”
Surprisingly enough it tends to be a good ice-breaker and a good way for me to understand what you are looking for and why you are looking.
It’s ok not to like your boss, or feel the company you work for does not value you, or you just want a change.
But you need to be honest with your recruiter because the grass is not always greener on the other side of the hill.
Many of the Hiring Managers I recruit for have very different personalities and management styles; and the more you can tell your recruiter what you are looking for, the better a chance I have of finding you “a real career opportunity”.
