Trust me I have being doing this for 10 Years and it is not for everyone.
When I set up ISS Ltd, I got my-self an office, secretary to answer the phone, coffee room, board room for client meetings; because that is what you do, Yes.
Well No, I spent most of my time in Hotels meeting talent across Ireland and less and less time in an office which had no use whatsoever.
After ditching the office, I increased my recruitment budget, spent more time and resources attracting talent and my clients massively benefited. Add in that a lot of my competitors are now struggling to pay there rent during the current lock-down you would think it was a good move.
Here is the downside and I see it increasingly with Talent, Clients and Vendors I am working with –
- You never turn off (24/7)
There is a finality off leaving the office during a long day which you can never truly have working from home. And it cannot be solved by having a separate office in your home, turning of your mobile phone; “work” will always be right on your doorstep.
- Productivity Falls
You can throw in a 5km run in the morning, mindfulness in the afternoon and whatever other fad is going but you will never work as hard as when your boss is standing over you. You will always find an excuse to step away from your desk (kids, errand, coffee), an excuse to sleep in, finish early, the temptation is always there.
- Relationships are putting under stress
Try sending an email, taking a call, and putting the kids to bed at the same time. There is a reason that no one is good at multitasking; trying to do it all, always ends in failure. And while in a classic work environment your family only must hear about “John not replacing the staff milk” in the evening; at home every slight and issue is magnified and amplified and who must hear about it; you guessed.
I am interested to hear what you think, please feel free to comment below.
