A all too often a phrase I will hear when taking calls from candidates who wish to apply into roles I am recruiting is –
“I don’t have the specific experience that you are looking for, but how do I get the job without getting the experience” (The Chicken or Egg Dilemma)
There really is no simple answer to this one, in Sales it really depends on the Product / Service. If you can sell Apples you can Sell Oranges, but if you sell IT Solution one day it is a big change to sell Medical Device the next.
One major barrier to entry into a new industry will always be Product Knowledge, and while within reason most things can be learned, what takes longer is developing relationships with new Clients who know you are new to the industry. Would you trust a builder to fix your leg, it’s all engineering after all?
My best advice is to be realistic with your expectations, if you want to break into a new Industry your future employer is going to have to invest time & money in bringing you up to speed; and they won’t do this on a Lager Basic Salary.
